A thatched roof can look stunning, but looks alone are not enough. Whether it serves for many years without trouble depends largely on careful planning and an orderly installation process. In this article we answer the question **how is a thatched roof built** in sequence, from the first conversation to handover day. The goal is for you to know the steps before you commission the work, and to ask the right questions.

**In short:** A thatched roof is built in steps: a free site survey, measuring and design, frame and substructure preparation, thatch laying and fixing, ridge and edge finishing, and a final check with handover. Each step relies on the previous one, so skipping steps tends to return later as repairs. Time and cost become clear only after the survey.

### 1. Site survey and needs analysis

Every good installation starts with seeing the site. During the survey we look at what the roof is for (garden pergola, restaurant terrace, beach club cabana, hotel entrance), how the area is exposed to wind and sun, nearby trees and heat sources, and the ground conditions. If a frame already exists we check its material, connection points and slope; if not, we discuss how it should be designed.

These questions should be answered at this stage:

- Will the roof only provide shade, or is protection from rain expected too?

- Will there be heat-producing elements inside, such as a barbecue, fireplace, stove or lighting?

- Do you want a dense, thick texture or a light, open surface?

The answers determine the roof type and layer thickness. The survey is free through our [consulting service](/en/hizmetler/danismanlik), and technical analysis and cost calculation are done at this stage too.

### 2. Measuring, design and material choice

After the survey the dimensions are taken and the roof form is decided: single pitch, double pitch, square, round or a custom shape. Slope matters a great deal here. Thatched roofs need enough pitch for water to run off quickly, and a very flat roof can shorten the life of a natural material. The exact suitable slope depends on the structure and material and is set during the survey.

On the material side you choose between hedgehog, stepped or mat panel installations. You can read the differences in detail in our hedgehog thatch guide. For products, see the options on the [Premium Reed Mat Roof](/en/urunler/sazlik-hasir/premium-sazlik-hasir-cati) page. If no product matches your request exactly, a custom design approach is worked out during the survey.

### 3. Frame and substructure preparation

A thatched roof cannot stand without a supporting frame. The frame can be timber, steel or bamboo and must be sized to carry the roof surface comfortably. Natural roofs may look light, but they get heavier when wet and place loads on the frame in wind. For that reason the frame, connections and footings are checked before the roof goes on.

In substructure preparation we pay attention to:

- **Battens:** the horizontal battens the thatch is tied to are placed evenly and straight.

- **Underlayer:** if extra rain protection is wanted, a suitable waterproof layer can be planned beneath the thatch. This is decided at the survey.

- **Ventilation:** air should be able to circulate beneath natural material; surfaces sealed without airflow wear out faster.

- **Distance from heat:** chimneys, fireplaces or barbecues are positioned at a safe distance from the thatch.

### 4. Laying and fixing the thatch

This is the most visible stage. Thatch bundles or mat panels are placed starting from the lower edge and working upward, each course overlapping the one below. Water therefore runs down over every layer and does not seep underneath. Each layer is tied to the battens with wire, cord or suitable fixings. In hedgehog style the bundles are laid dense and thick; in stepped work the ends of the layers are left visible like steps.

Dense laying and correct fixing decide how the roof behaves in rain and wind. It takes experience, because a loose bundle shifts over time while an over-tight tie can snap the reed. That is why laying is carried out by trained crews under our [Installation](/en/hizmetler/kurulum) service.

#### 5. Ridge, edges and final finishing

The most critical points of a roof are the ridge and the edges. Where two surfaces meet at the ridge, the joint is sealed with extra protection, because it is where water can most easily get in. At the edges the thatch ends are cut to a clean line and compacted into shape. These finishes determine both the look and the life of the roof. If you want lighting or a fan added, it is done at this stage without breaking the integrity of the roof.

#### 6. Inspection, handover and care plan

When work is done, the surface, connections, ridge and edges are reviewed once more. At handover we explain how the roof will behave, what small changes you may notice in the first weeks, and when to have it checked. Thatched roofs are planned to last for a long time with regular care, and you can find the steps on the [Maintenance and Repair](/en/hizmetler/bakim) page.

Giving a fixed duration or cost would not be honest, because it depends on the size, form and location of the structure. That information can only be given after the survey.

### Frequently asked questions

#### What stages does building a thatched roof involve?

There are six main stages: site survey and needs analysis, measuring and design, frame and substructure preparation, thatch laying and fixing, ridge and edge finishing, and finally the inspection, handover and maintenance plan.

#### Does a thatched roof need a waterproofing layer underneath?

If extra protection against rain is wanted, a suitable waterproofing layer can be planned under the thatch, and that decision is made during the site survey. Ventilation matters too, because surfaces left closed and airless wear out faster.

#### What roof slope is right for thatch?

It would not be right to give a fixed value; the slope is determined during the survey according to the structure and the material. As a general principle, enough slope is planned for water to run off quickly, since very flat roofs can shorten the life of natural material.

#### What decides how long a thatched roof takes and what it costs?

It would not be right to give a fixed number; time and cost depend on the size, form and location of the structure. That information can only be given after the free site survey, where technical analysis and cost calculation are also carried out.

### Start with a free site survey

If you want a thatched roof, the first step is to look at the space together. Fill in the short form on the [Get a Quote](/en/teklif-al) page to request a free survey and a price offer, or choose a day on the [appointment](/en/randevu) page. We serve all of Turkey, and you can see the [service regions](/en/hizmet-bolgeleri/turkiye-geneli) page for more detail.
